FAQ: Why Do We Limit Percentages to 3 Decimals?

Updated over a year ago

Q1: Why does Baseline Lending limit percentages to 3 decimal places?
A1: We limit the display of percentages to 3 decimal places for ease of readability and clarity. This makes it simpler to view and understand numbers without unnecessary complexity while maintaining accuracy where it counts.

Q2: Does limiting the display of decimals affect the accuracy of calculations?
A2: No, it does not. While percentages are visually rounded to 3 decimal places, all calculations within the system continue to use the full precision (15 decimals) of the underlying data. This ensures that calculation accuracy does not suffer despite the simplified display.

Q3: Where do I still see the full decimal values?
A3: The following areas display all decimal values, as they are critical for precise loan details and rate adjustments:

  • Loan rate: Loan interest rates are shown with full decimal precision.

  • Editing Spread Allocation: While editing and adding spread allocation phases to a loan:

  • Borrower Statement: To provide complete transparency, borrower statements show all decimal places.

Q4: Can I adjust the decimal display settings?
A4: The 3-decimal limit is a system-wide setting designed to enhance clarity and simplify the user interface. At this time, users cannot adjust these settings. However, as noted above, full accuracy is always retained in calculations.

Q5: Why are full decimals needed in some areas but not others?
A5: Certain system areas, like the loan rate or Borrower Statement, require the full precision of decimal values to ensure accurate reporting and compliance with industry standards. In contrast, other areas benefit from a more straightforward presentation to reduce cognitive load and streamline the user experience.
